Hard Times began as a DIY ’zine created in the aftermath of the 2007-2008 financial crisis, offering relief, connection, and creative freedom during an anxious cultural moment. Built on a “let your freak flag fly” ethos, it welcomed everyone and became a source of joy, education, and community through its publications and events, leaving a lasting impact even after it eventually faded.

 

That spirit lives on today through Do Something Already. In response to a hyper-digital world and inspired by rediscovering the original issues, the DSA team is now reviving Hard Times as a tangible, community-driven space, releasing a new generation of the ’zine rooted in connection, creativity, and collective care.
